Birthday: September 21

Hometown: Basking Ridge, NJ; now: Brooklyn, NY

Playing Drums Since: 1994

First Drum Kit: I don’t think there was a brand name anywhere on it. So it was one of those generic ones. But I know I got it at Star Music in Morristown, NJ which isn’t there anymore. Then I got a late 80’s Tama Swingstar which has since made it back to its original owner. So it went full circle.

Favorite Paiste Cymbal and Why: I’d have to go with my ride, which is a 20“ Signature Full Ride. But I use several others from the Signature series and I love them all. They’re all so musical. I love the way they sound.

Heroes: I’ll stick to drummers. Billy Martin is definitely my favorite and has been for a while. I love focusing on groove and texture and he’s a master at both. When I was growing up, Dave Grohl, Chad Smith and Jon Fishman were my guys (I still love them too).

Top 3 Albums or Songs: That’s such a tough one...I think I’ll just go with what I’m listening to now which is a lot of new albums from My Morning Jacket and Guster, who are two of my favorites. I also can’t get enough of Mew lately.

My Best Ever Show/Recording Session: We recently played at Madison Square Garden and that one will be hard to top. As a diehard Rangers fan, I’ve been going there my whole life and I have also seen a ton of amazing shows there. To top it off, I met Trey Anastasio after the show who i’ve seen there multiple times. So it was all a lot to process.

Favorite Paiste Artist Show I Attended: Captain Kirk Douglas of the Roots has another band called Dust Rays. The drummer is Ricc Sheridan and he’s the one who introduced me to the Paiste family. I saw them in Harlem one night and I couldn’t believe how big Ricc’s sound was. And Kirk is a total shredder.

My Ritual(s) Before A Show and/or a Recording Session: I do rudiments on a pad and some stretching as well. Nothing too crazy but I make sure to do a little of both before each show if I can. And pound club soda.

Do You Prefer Touring or Recording? Why?: I would say touring, for sure. There’s a finality to recording that can be stressful. With Phantogram, I’m so fortunate to play some of the best venues around the world to amazing crowds. So I love being on stage with that energy and the light show and everything that goes with it.

Recommendation For A Beginner: be patient and try to always take lessons if possible. And of course always be having fun. If it isn’t fun for you then there’s something wrong.
