Birthday: March 17

Hometown: Saratoga, CA

Playing Drums Since: Age 12

First Drum Kit: Tama Rockstar

First Paiste Cymbal: 18” Orchestral Crash cymbals. I was in marching and symphonic band from junior high up through high school and the beautiful, powerful orchestral percussion line was my first introduction to Paiste.

Favorite Paiste Cymbal and Why: 24” Giant Beat Ride. It’s got this delicious sonic spectrum of sounds, from wet edges to the drier bell. I particularly love crashing this Godzilla cymbal. It’s so wonderfully heavy and washy, like dropping a bomb into a lake (with no life in or near this imaginary lake, of course – peace!). We used this cymbal extensively on our recording of our latest song “When I’m Away.” On another note, I think if I actually needed a protective body shield, I could fit my entire self behind this massive cymbal.

Heroes

Karen Carpenter – if I hadn’t seen a video of her drumming and singing when I was a kid, I would have never thought I had it within myself to nurture my love of the drums and music into a career.

Cindy Blackman Santana – I saw her drum with Lenny Kravitz when I was in high school. She did a standing drum solo and the crowd went wilder than I’d ever seen before.

Dominic Howard – just saw him live again last week. I am constantly in awe.

Gunnar Olsen – I saw him perform with Big Data. He has this ability to maintain the heavy, basic drum feel that the songs need while adding extremely groovy, yet tasteful amounts of auxiliary rhythms that partner with the already killer bass lines. They work together to create this inescapable steamroller of driving funkiness.

Hobbies: Remixing music. Trying to cat whisper. Practicing my perfect spiral football throw. Rewatching episodes of The Golden Girls. Continually learning how to surf. Maintaining my cat’s Instagram (@richard_kitty).

Favorite Food: Japanese food is my comfort food.

Favorite Movie: Impossible question… Here’s one of my favorites: ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.’

Top 3 Albums: Teen Dream (Beach House ), Close To You (The Carpenters), Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots (The Flaming Lips).

Favorite Car or Motorcycle vs. Your Ride: I want a Tesla. I drive a Toyota.

Favorite Song That You Recorded/Tracked On: Wishing Wells (The Colourist)

Favorite Holiday Destination: Anywhere with friends and family. Also, Maui, HI.

Favorite City: Miami, FL was a magical city to explore on tour.

Your Best Ever Show: For some reason, crowds are always impressively enthusiastic in Montreal. We always have an amazing show there.

Favorite Paiste Artist Show I Attended: We watched Walk The Moon in Vancouver on their sold-out headline tour. The energy in that room was insane and Sean Waugaman is an explosive tornado of a drummer. Also, we played with Capital Cities (coincidentally, also in Vancouver) and Channing Cook Holmes is a rhythm machine. Incredible show.

If I Wasn’t A Drummer..: I think I might have tried to go to law school.

What You Can’t Buy With Money: Inspiration. Good friends and family.

My Ritual(s) Before A Show and/or a Recording Session: Lots of stretches and victory poses.

Do You Prefer Touring or Recording? Why?: Both, depending on how saturated I am with either. Of my top 10 most surreal moments in life, I think about half of them have happened on tour. What makes touring amazing is the temporal aspect of it all; recording is incredible because of the permanence. It’s a fulfilling feeling to be able to sign off on a song and really love this eternal sonic stamp you’ve created.

Recommendation(s) For A Beginner: Hard work is far more important than innate ability. If you start at zero and work hard, you will get farther than a lazy talented person who is trying to get by without practicing.
