Shannon Forrest performs at Modern Drummer Festival 2010

The Modern Drummer Festival has long been thought of as one of the best events for drummers to get together and see some of the great players of the day. The 2010 festival was no exception.

Shannon Forrest and his band (Craig Young & Chris Rodriquez) brought a Nashville groove to New Jersey for the event. Through discussion, playing and answering questions, Shannon explained how he approaches playing in the studio with some of the biggest names in music. Whether it was how to place the beat, find a groove or how to make a fill important, Shannon demonstrated that he has chops to rival anyone on the scene but the maturity to know when to use them and when to hold back.

Using music that exemplified the ideas he was presenting, the audience was able to get an in depth idea of how Shannon creates parts for songs. Ranging from mellow tunes to an instrumental jam or hard rock groove, the band gave everyone in attendance something to grab on to. Discussing the influence of drummers like late studio great and Paiste artist Jeff Porcaro, Shannon taught the crowd that even a simple groove or fill is as important as a complicated part. Learning to give depth to grooves and finding a way to make each fill an important part of the song is why Shannon is one of the most in demand players today.

His incredible work ethic and deep pocket are the keys that will keep Shannon as the go to guy in Nashville for years to come. Congratulations on a stellar performance Shannon!
