Josh Kane | New Uh Huh Her Single & Album





“Uh Huh Her, the LA-based electro-pop duo comprised of CAMILA GREY, and LEISHA HAILEY, featuring Paiste artist JOSH KANE, will return March 25, with their third full-length album, FUTURE SOULS (Plaid Records). The group has premiered the first single “Innocence” whose divine hooks pipe through an electronic haze bolstered by strains of guitar and bass.

"In the world at every moment, people are bombarded with information and bad news," CAMILA explains re the pulsating first single. "You're inundated with it, and it's never positive. Unless you live on a commune with vegetable gardens and puppies running around, you're under a deluge of the world's craziness.” After a critically acclaimed catalog of two LPs and three EPs, independently carving out a diehard fan base, and playing countless packed shows, the Los Angeles duo of CAMILA GREY and LEISHA HAILEY would have it all figured out. Walking into their third full-length album, FUTURE SOULS (Plaid Records), Uh Huh Her kept asking a myriad of questions and found they're still making discoveries and inquiries on both philosophical and musical levels. "It comes back to the title," declares CAMILA. "I'm constantly questioning what the hell is going on with this planet. We're on a big ball floating through space around another larger ball of fire. That constantly perplexes me, and I'm like, Where are we?' Those questions culminated in a lot of the new songs. The concept of FUTURE SOULS asks, 'Where are we going? What are we evolving into? Where does your soul go?'"

Taking their time, the pair allowed the music to whisk them down a new path. In 2013, they made the choice to move their recording studio back home into their shared L.A. abode. As a result, creativity could be captured in the moment in its most uninhibited form as they embraced new elements while preserving their own sonic and aural trademarks. "We finally had the time and space to really get creative," continues LEISHA. "We didn't have to rush ourselves with any sort of deadlines. Everything was created within these four walls. That's the beauty of being completely independent. We only have to answer to ourselves. We knew we wanted to go in a dance direction, but it doesn't sound like a traditional 'dance' record." CAMILA adds, "It's not straightforward. It's very off-the cuff, and that comes from writing and recording at home. Think of it as avant-garde pop with a dance beat. We didn't follow any format." On FUTURE SOULS, LEISHA and CAMILA tapped the talents of Ché Pope [Kanye West, Jay-Z] for the nocturnal electro pop lust of "Nuthin' Without Your Love." Punctuated by a slick guitar twang and a haze of keys, it's meant for movement of all kinds. "I wanted it to sound soulful," CAMILA admits. "I grew up listening to Whitney Houston, and I practiced singing to The Bodyguard soundtrack. I felt like a soul singer in there. There's a weird soul quality to the album." In addition to collaborating with Pope, the girls also invited Big Black Delta frontman and CAMILA’s former Mellowdrone band mate Jonathan Bates into the fold. These collaborations expanded the scope of the album even more. "It was great to bounce ideas off other people," says LEISHA. "It freed us up in some ways to get even more creative." CAMILA concludes, "We don't do things the same way every time. That keeps it interesting. It gives something to keep coming back to and think about."

Formed in Los Angeles, Uh Huh Her debuted to a packed house of industry heads, critics and fans, many of whom might have been more familiar with HAILEY’s character “Alice” on TV’s “The L Word.” For GREY, it was her first group project since tenure with the lo-fi indie-rock outfit Mellowdrone (Jonathan Bates, Big Black Delta). Co-produced by GREY and Al Clay (Pixies) Common Reaction, the group’s debut was a full serving of new wave electro-pop that broke through with the anthemic single "Not A Love Song." The album went on to receive an overwhelming amount of critical praise, with the New York Times hailing the disc "…a lush, layered collection of dizzying, synth-driven pop" and the Village Voice adding “Uh Huh Her’s debut album is a stylized mix of guitars and synthesizers framed by melancholic yet glamour-tinged vocals”. Los Angeles Times hailed it, “an electro-pop feast characterized by layers of overlapping vocals" (David Greenwald). Rolling Stone coined the duo a “Sultry indie electro duo…” and SPIN magazine added, “[Uh Huh Her] create a lush soundscape of lilting piano arrangements, percolating electronic threads, and sparkling vocals a la Metric and the now-defunct Organ.” In October 2011, UHH released their second LP NOCTURNES, produced by CAMILA and Wendy Melvoin (Prince & the Revolution, Wendy & Lisa) the album was recorded at Wendy’s personal studio inside the famed Henson Studios compound in Los Angeles. The track “Debris” was produced by LEISHA and guitarist Brad Ackley. The resulting11-song mix perfectly melds the group’s moody dance pop with guitar and synth-driven electro. The LA Weekly to describe it as “…a combination of against-the-grain grit and pop ambition that live, delivers a little snarl and a lot of swoon.” Rolling Stone premiered the first single and video “Black & Blue,” and hailed it an “intense, understated clip that is well-suited to the band's dark, moody sensibility” (Alex Levy). Album highlights including the anthemic, synthesizer-driven songs “Another Case,” “Wake To Sleep,” and “Human Nature” as well as “Same High,” written for and featured in the Golden Globe-winning and Academy Award-nominated film The Kids Are All Right, typify the combination of beauty and aggression that UH HUH HER harness both lyrically and musically. The duo will release their third album FUTURE SOULS March 25, 2014.
